Anyone using no-self as an excuse that suffering isn't real has clearly not descended into the depths of hell and investigated it for themselves, and is just repeating some dogma that they don't understand because they want to appear more spiritual. Barf.

That said, if I remember correctly, non-dualism itself pertains to the idea that the separation between the observer and the observed is an illusion. So, it wouldn’t undermine the experience of suffering.

That's right. It's often misused to pretend that suffering is not real, as a form of spiritual bypassing. Properly understood, it does not deny the existence of suffering.
