Yeah, and the Garfield paper about Tibetan Buddhist fearing death will be cited by general sources for the next ten years (it's already old) but within his sphere of academic literature it is a weak paper. LionsRoar loved it.

On the upside, we can use the Garfield paper as a springboard for our own discussion. So tell me, setting aside any concerns about others... do you fear the end of experience? Assuming others'll be fine without you, is it OK with you if you go to sleep tonight and don't wake up?

I used to fear the end of existence a lot more than I do now but it is still a fear it for sure. How do you really wrap your head around that your existence will end? It's difficult to imagine my thread of consciousness coming to an abrupt halt.

I think I have come to terms with the fact that dying is a natural process. I like what John Lennon said about Taxis.. I like what Yogi's say about "trust me, I've come down from the mountain and it's no big deal" LOL. I fear the process of dying. Tubes/hospitals/meds/pain.

Interesting. I do wonder if most people really fear the process of dying rather than the self-annihilation. It's an important distinction.

Agree. I fear suffering. "Tubes/hospitals/meds/pain," as
@fuzzylogic8250 puts it. Also humiliation, degradation, insanity, incapacity, & being a burden to others. All of that terrifies me. Being dead, though, as I understand it, is the end of suffering. I don't fear that.1 reply 1 retweet 1 like -

I take it you are not a big believer in rebirth? I have been reading about "imagining" lesser rebirth & immense suffering not because they are real but because they open our heads up to dealing with suffering during our final days and finding acceptence. Imagining vs belief.

I don't take seriously the idea that when I die I'll be reborn as something else. I reckon it will just be over. Don't know, of course, but that's my working assumption. Rebirth theory is great for understanding the current situation, moment to moment, day to day.

I weary of what people believe. Even Buddhist. This imagining take on things may solve that for me. Like, you know Faith verses Buddhist faith. Imagining is a practice and we are advised to have faith in the practice. I want to study this more.

Right now I'm going to bed and imagine myself dead.
Maybe I will have more on this tomorrow. Thank you for your time and words.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes
I for one hope you wake up tomorrow, @fuzzylogic8250.
