"How did (Jordan) Peterson become such an effective Iron John bromide machine?" Another wicked-funny book review dripping with literary snark:https://johannesburgreviewofbooks.com/2018/04/04/richard-poplak-sets-jordan-b-petersons-house-in-order-a-scorching-review-of-12-rules-for-life/ …

To be honest, I didn't find this review to have much substance. The author didn't really lay out Peterson's points and discuss why they are wrong; he essentially just threw together a stream of clever personal attacks.

All true. Still, I'm wary of the oft-repeated argument that we shouldn't criticize Peterson because we haven't heard/read all his stuff. No one should be required to slog through his interminable body of pap before deciding they aren't buying what he's selling. I've heard enough.

Nothing wrong with criticizing anyone without slogging through all of their work. My concern is whether the way in which the criticism is presented is likely to help matters or make the problem worse.

Yes, I hear that. I say forget about the diehards and speak to those who haven't yet made up their minds. Mock the wing nuts so ruthlessly that people are ashamed to listen to them. Mockery may not be the high road, but it's very effective. And the stakes are high.

That's fair enough. I do think people overestimate the number of swing votes in culture wars, and underestimate the extent of damage resulting from nudging slightly off-center people into extremism. But there is a reasonable discussion to be had, and I appreciate you having it.
