"How did (Jordan) Peterson become such an effective Iron John bromide machine?" Another wicked-funny book review dripping with literary snark:https://johannesburgreviewofbooks.com/2018/04/04/richard-poplak-sets-jordan-b-petersons-house-in-order-a-scorching-review-of-12-rules-for-life/ …

To be honest, I didn't find this review to have much substance. The author didn't really lay out Peterson's points and discuss why they are wrong; he essentially just threw together a stream of clever personal attacks.

All true. Still, I'm wary of the oft-repeated argument that we shouldn't criticize Peterson because we haven't heard/read all his stuff. No one should be required to slog through his interminable body of pap before deciding they aren't buying what he's selling. I've heard enough.

Nothing wrong with criticizing anyone without slogging through all of their work. My concern is whether the way in which the criticism is presented is likely to help matters or make the problem worse.

Yes, I hear that. I say forget about the diehards and speak to those who haven't yet made up their minds. Mock the wing nuts so ruthlessly that people are ashamed to listen to them. Mockery may not be the high road, but it's very effective. And the stakes are high.

I prefer deconstructing their arguments and articulating why they're wrong. Hate speech is unconstructive and toxic waste of resources for everyone involved.

Nonsense. If you can stop fascism by mockery, you have an obligation to do so. See Fox News if you doubt the power of propaganda. There is a point beyond which over-fastidiousness becomes a liability, as people less scrupulous than you kill everyone you know. See Germany 1933-45.

I agree. So you're projecting an image of a fascist onto Jordan Peterson's public persona? And you support that he should be treated like one, regardless of the actuality of his work?

Jordan Peterson is best seen as a proto-fascist. His work enables fascism even as he claims to disavow it. This is empirically verifiable. All we have to do is look around and see who is using his work to validate their ideology. The alt-right have embraced him.

I don't have enough insight to argue for or against that. I guess every ideologically possessed person could cherry-pick specific claims out of anyone's work to support their delusions. If my memory is correct the nazis used Nietzsche.

Nietzsche died in 1900 and was long-dead before the advent of Nazism. @jordanbpeterson is alive today. If he doesn't want to be the ideological underpinning for neofascism, he can fix it. Meanwhile we can assume he is comfortable in the role.
