So, this particular guru has understood the structure of awakenings: how they happen, but does not understand how meditation, used properly, can prepare a person for awakenings, and how the structure of particular meditations make awakenings more likely.

I just wonder, if he doesn't think that practices can prepare a person for awakening, what does he actually teach his students? You can't just hand people enlightenment, even if you're enlightened yourself. Presumably he must be instructing people to do *something*.

contemplate certain facts about the human condition, like the fact that seeking happiness leads to sorrow (very Buddhist). He's trying to get them to a Satori moment. In some ways his method is very similar to what J. Krishnamurit suggested.

Fair enough, although one could argue that this is itself some form of practice. Also, I'd imagine that the number of people who go through sudden enlightenment is pretty small. It's incredibly hard to just cut through all the conditioning out of nowhere.

I suppose that does explain his selectivity with accepting students, though.

gotta be really desperate for it. Also it means he's come down hard against doing "doing mindfulness will not get you enlightenment". The doing becomes a substitution for the leap. And yeah, this often happens.

but meditation is intended to: 1) increase the amount of your brain online and able to process an awakening 2) highlight certain things about reality you wouldn't otherwise see 3) teach you how to control awareness and attention so you don't miss stuff.
