My pessimism isn't so much a belief that things won't change, or that they can't in principle. It's a simple acknowledgement that the cards are stacked against us by mere probability.
The difference between pessimism and cynicism is that the former allows for action and strategy, while the latter often sees our demise as surely inevitable. It's a fine line to walk, and I definitely fail to stay on balance at times.
