All of the above may be true in some sense, but as practical instructions they're pretty much useless. You also tend to hear such statements from people who in fact spent years practicing before allegedly getting enlightened.

Right, "allegedly". The problem with this kind of language is that it also serves as a great tool for self-deception. Have a "mystical" experience, then parrot whatever description sounds the most profound regardless of how arbitrary it is. There, you're enlightened.
