Can anyone clear up the following seeming contradiction in Buddhist teachings? On the one hand, there is a lot of talk about the countless lifetimes it takes to arrive at nibbana. This was particularly drilled into us in the Goenka tradition. 1/

The key is to understand these passages as sacred literature, not as a factual science of 'how to do' something. What they have in common is their structure: numerical descent from greater to lesser periods of time, with 2 similar outcomes: arhantship or non-returning.

The scales are different (years, months, weeks) but the general point is the same: regular practice over an extended period of time yields certain results. Folks, sacred literature is not designed to make literal sense; Buddhist scripture is allegorical, just like the Bible.
