1: I am utterly convinced that one of the most challenging complex emotions that we have got to come to grips with as contemporary practitioners (inside & out) is cynicism.

I’m not so sure there is a top or bottom to change.

I think there are stories that attempt to draw out causal connections, but when it comes to the final relation between personal & cultural it’s always both-and.
What do you think? -
I guess treating culture as separate from the individual is misleading in some sense. Seems to me they're clearly separate and yet clearly inseparable.
-
Alright, now I'm just desultorily confusing myself. Perhaps I was just trying to contribute to the discussion without first clearly figuring out what it is I wanted to contribute.
-
Let's try again. Might it be useful to differentiate between, say, macro-political change, and change in how individuals relate to themselves and others around them on an every-day level?
-
Yes, I agree this differentiation can be useful.

Notice that I never used exclusively personal-individualist language in this tweetstorm. That appears to be something that you read into it. Is that you reading into it or culture reading into it? Is it me rejecting that duality or culture rejecting it? Who knows...
-
You're right - that was an assumption on my part. I guess my instinct was to think of the problem in those terms. Maybe that instinct wasn't useful, I'm not really sure.

It's very hard to reform institutions when individuals suffer from the same failures as institutions. But people are reluctant to change before institutions do (and it's incredibly hard to change when institutions reinforce our individual failures). It's a massive clusterfuck.
-
I think it’s possible that you may be overcomplexifying.
-
Wouldn't be out of character for me...
