fair enough. but bodhisattvas are supposed to be responsive to suffering, supplication to intercede, etc. you're saying they're here but no one is keeping a record?

And maybe without the supplication, they won't intercede. Or maybe they are wrathful in expression and are intervening by showing us how terrible everything is, so that we wake up to it

the lamas never seem to mention this. they simply ask us to supplicate. the compassion of bodhisattvas is such that it is impossible that they won't respond.

Lama Tenpa would say that Bush (W) was a bodhisattva. And he said that Hitler and Mao were wrathful buddhas. They use evil to wake us all up. Trump must he a really powerful being, from that perspective.

I suppose they do whatever it takes to awaken beings, according to that perspective

Hahaha never claimed that I believed it or that it made sense. But some Buddhists definitely believe that you can do whatever it takes, including violence, to free beings

Unfortunately that's exactly where that kind of thinking could lead. Complete absolution of all wrong-doing in the name of the dharma.

How does one tell the difference between that and true bodhisattva behavior?

The effect on reality? The effect on my own understanding? Maybe there are no bodhisattvas out there. So if we can act with compassion, that's the manifestation of the boddhisattva. If we are helping to alleviate suffering, that's bodhisattva activity.
