Which comes first? Mass awakening or figuring out how to build a society where children aren't regularly killed by their peers? I feel disgusted that I have just as much compassion for a white supremacist loser who shoots up his school as I do for innocent children who get shot.

But selective compassion is not compassion - it's tribalism. As long as we don't recognize the humanity in every tragedy, we will not have a human solution to these tragedies.

Not long ago I would have thought Buddhism was the solution to everything. But that was comically naive, no better than a mindless religious conviction. If everything is viewed through the lens of Buddhism - or any "ism" for that matter - nothing is actually seen clearly.

The ultimate cosmic joke is that when you see the answer to all of this it's so fucking obvious - literally too obvious to put into words. So what good is awakening anyway?

The answer to humanity's fundamental problem, which is how we can resolve the ideological differences that cause so much suffering in the world. I supposed if I had to put it into words, it would be to drop our ideologies all together.

We're so caught up in being "right", when there's nothing to be right about.

so if humans drop their ideologies, suffering will disappear?

It would be a hell of a first step. I would argue that much of the reason we don't seem to give a shit about anyone that isn't us is because we're blinded by our beliefs.

      and what is the solution?

To stop asking what the right thing is to believe, and start asking what is the most useful action to take in each circumstance.

Put another way, if we navigate the world through propositional ethics - those guided by beliefs in what is right or wrong - we get blinded by the lens through which we're viewing the world.

I thought the idea of buddhism is that samsara can’t be fixed. It also sounds like the world in your mind’s eye is a static thing.

I'm not very interested in Buddhism. What do you mean by "it also sounds like the world in your mind's eye is a static thing"?

My intention of using ‘static world’ is the seeming presumption we are sharing a particular world that has a shared destiny. The earth is not literally a noun. It appears that way, but I haven’t seen alot of evidence to show the appearance isnt chaotically shifting and branching.

For all intents and purposes I'm comfortable presuming that and acting as if we all live in a relatively shared world, because living in this way is most conducive to reducing suffering. I couldn't care less about the metaphysical truth or falsity of that presumption.

....and how is it bhikkus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of Satipatṭhāna [The Four Foundations of Mindfulness] - Samyutta Nikaya 47.19 ..others suttas end with patience.

There is a lot of metaphysical truth vs non metaphysical truth debate among Buddhist. All phenomena are inherently empty. There is no mythology. Metaphysical Buddhist need to realize this to avoid wrong view. Non metaphysical Buddhist need to know this to stop arguing.

Maybe I need to work on my communication skills. As I said, there are many ways to try to put it into words, but none of them are adequate. I appreciate you asking those questions.
