'In a word, Buddhism is non-self [muga]. Non-self means that “I” am not a separate subject. When “I” am not a separate subject, then I fill the entire universe. That I fill the entire universe is what’s meant by “all things manifest the truth”.' Kodo Sawaki

I get the first 2 sentences, but why do people think non-self means you "fill the entire universe"? How does one manage to turn a misperception of phenomena into validating yourself as being the entire universe? This sounds like monism and transcendentalism, not emptiness.

Well, to be clear, I never said I think that. I quoting Kodo Sawaki. I can't answer for him. My reading of it is it is simply a poetic description of interdependence.

It doesn't refute nor negate emptiness. The universe is emptiness and form. If there is no separate self.....then "you" (if there is a you) must also be the full picture, that's all it means. still all empty.

To me "you are the universe" isn't woo or airy fairyness, it's just the way it is. There is no separate, objective self. The lines are blurred. So ultimately there is just one thing we are all parts of. Nothing magical or special. Just how it is.

When you are not a self, then there is nothing that is not you either. I'm speaking experientially of course

Is "you are not a self" equivalent to "there is nothing that is you?

          Yes, both and. Nonduality.

I haven't experienced much of this stuff first hand. It just struck me as strange that "there is nothing that is you", and "there is nothing that is not you" could both be true at the same time. Is the latter using a weaker definition of "you"?

I’m reading “fill the entire universe” as “am interconnected inseparably with all things,” which is the fundamental reality (manifesting the “truth”).
