    Among those I talked to for this story: - A family with a child who has a heart defect in Texas - A family with four kids trying to pay rent in San Diego - a family still paying for expenses after typhoons in Guam.

    The Coast Guard just announced that will pay its service members through this week. But talk to families involved, and you'll still hear worry and frustration. Their question: Why is the service being treated differently than the rest of the military?

    Border agents took antibiotics away from her sick baby & detained them in a freezing cell called an icebox. When she asked for help, agents called her an “invader” who “wasn’t in a position to be asking for anything.” After 5 days, the baby had pneumonia.

    To do this story, The Washington Post flew me to Iowa, put me up in a hotel for nearly a week and funded my meals. That all cost money. I hope you'll consider spending a few bucks to subscribe to The Post. Journalism's expensive work, and we need readers to chip in when they can.

    I wish would eliminate the paywall so everyone could read this article. I’m in pieces right now.
