Even if he did work there he 100% does not have arrest powers. Don't blame the guard.

@T.J. Martin You dont need arrest power to stop sb from stealing, same as you don't have to wish a nice day to sb who is stealing your bag, you are allowed to intervene with appropriate force. Why would ANY store hire a security if he behaves like him?

For visual deterrence, responding to emergencies, and as an extra witness. Your response shows only your lack of knowledge of this particular part of criminal law.

There are situations where a regular citizen may detain another person until the proper authorities (usually meaning the police) arrive and take over, this is exactly one of these cases. Security guards do not have FEWER rights than a regular citizen

Yeah, you just don't understand reality. If they act out they WILL get fired. Their jobs matter more to them than stopping a shoplifter.

You might be correct as im living in Europe. But this makes no sense, why should a company hire a security in the first place and firing him when protecting the goods in its store? Moreover, why should he be fired when he uses the same rights every citizen has?

He's not there to actively protect the goods. He's there as a deterrent only. And every citizen does not have the right to apprehend someone in a shoplifting case.

Ok, i learned sth new...seems the US is the only country who does have this kind of restrictions, regarding that you can shoot sb who is entering your house without permission. Kind of weird...
