Given all we know, why rush to deploy such a controversial technology? Even if it’s legal, that doesn’t mean it’s ethical. And just because a new technology becomes available, that doesn’t mean the police have 'a duty to deploy it My comment

“Huawei launched a trial project in Kenya, installing high-definition surveillance cameras and training police to use it. “The claim crime rate was lowered by 46%” Pitching surveillance & smart cities to African Governments will end in tears 😯🧐

I’m increasingly impatient with siloed thinking. Cutting edge research and theorising happens outside of academia. And organised civil society doesn’t have a monopoly on advocacy and activism. Some academic institutions are at the forefront of social justice & organising.

Stop asking "who owns your data?" and start asking "who has the means to exploit it?"

The EU already rejected a temporary ban on facial recognition in public spaces in the previous draft that was leaked - but now the option seems entirely off the table. Not what progressive tech policy looks like.

Great paper: major US companies that offer automated hiring systems in the UK rely on US understandings of discrimination law & ethnic groups when operating in Europe & may not comply w. data protection law

Digital identity will be one of the big political battles of the 2020s - esp how it enables not simply surveillance but for the State to discriminate between groups (see India and Aadhaar)

I’ve been saying this for quite some time now: Unregulated AdTech is more than a threat to privacy - it’s a risk to ‘national security’ (a word I don’t like because it’s so often weaponised to undermine privacy)

How to study & scrutinise New Delhi's predictive policing system when: - no public tender documents - operation procedures + specifications unknown - broad exceptions under FOIA - extent and use of deployment unclear

I like this. Roles for computing in social change Jon Kleinberg 1. Computing as diagnostic 2. Computing as formaliser 3. Computing as rebuttal 4. Computing as synecdoche

To simplify the argument: Optimisation systems optimise some metrics in order to extract some value. This framing enables us to look past individuals that are making decisions and allows for a broader conversations about harms of systems beyond bias and privacy.

A fantastic presentation on novel way of contestation and resistance, when accountability fails. Strong argument for reframing automated decision making systems as optimisation systems.
