  1. Reports of 8 demonstrators killed by Sadrists in Najaf. Will the religious establishment condemn these acts of murder in the same terms as it decried the death of QSim Someimani?

  6. If I were the PM-designate, and assuming he is confirmed, I would get the country ready for elections, hold as clean a set of elections as possible, and call it a day. If he undertakes any larger agenda, he will fail, because the parliamentary parties will see to it. Ask AAM.

  7. I understand the demands of the demonstrators &all that, but it seems to me we have wasted the last two months—&are about to waste another—on government formation for a caretaker government to plan elections, instead of just planning for elections and getting on with it.

Huge diplomatic victory for Abbas and the PLO. Even states that attended the Trump/Bibi ceremony (UAE, Oman, Bahrain) are now on record as rejecting. Anything less would’ve allowed the admin to claim some Arab support. That’s no longer possible.

  12. While performance of Pres. has been generally disappointing, he is right to say that he will nominate a PM on 1 Feb. if Parliament does not act. His action may be extra-constitutional in a strict sense, but no one else can break the constitutional impasse.

  13. How ironic. In 1948, during the protests against the Portsmouth Agreement, Sayyid Muhammad al-Sadr, perennially Speaker if the Senate, resigned in protest over the shooting of protestors. When the government of the day resigned, al-Sadr formed the next government, until elections

  16. Not that anyone in seems to care much, but, if true, and if it is being done without Baghdad’s approval, it is a violation of international norms and the Iraqi Constitution.

The statement speaks for itself. The government of Iraq needs to take serious measures before it starts to lose international support.

  19. The presence or absence of Sadr is a matter of relative indifference. He was never a leader of these protests, but was always trying “to get out in front of the parade", as the expression goes.
