The first 'Eastern Grasshopper Warbler' (Locustella naevia straminea) was in 2012 - also a leap year...

Friday fact: the last five additions to the British List from Fair Isle have all occurred in leap years: Citril Finch (2008), Rufous-tailed Robin and Chestnut-eared Bunting (both 2004), Brown Flycatcher (1992) and Blyth's Pipit (1988).

It's not long until the start of another season... We're recruiting two Assistant Wardens and a Ranger for 2020, so have a look at if you're interested in joining us.

FIBOT director Karen Hall with some lovely aerial photos. We especially like the one of a wave-girted Fair Isle, giving an idea of what winter can be like on the Isle.

A miserable day of weather (flights to the Isle cancelled and even the Northlink ferries aren't running to Shetland tonight or tomorrow), but it brought some white-wingers, with two 2CY Iceland Gulls at Setter and three 2CY Glaucous Gulls (two at Furse, one at Difield).

That's the last of the year's sightings updated on the website. Enjoy your Hogmanay, however you're spending it. As it's the end of the 2010s, how about letting us know your Fair Isle 'bird of the decade' - just don't expect us to reply for a couple of days! Have a great 2020.

According to I've seen over 700 species of bird in the last decade; from multicolored tanagers to arctic owls. But for me, bird of the decade takes me to 2018 on and this - 'Fair Isle' Wren (T. t. fridariensis).

We hope you've all had a good Christmas. Our present arrived a little late; these two Waxwings turned up in the Schoolhouse garden on Boxing Day and are still present today. Also 1CY Iceland Gull on 26th-27th and 1CY Glaucous Gull on 24th.

Movements of a couple of birds ringed in Norway this autumn. This Blackbird (first map) ringed on 26th Oct and seen on Fair Isle on 9th Nov and a Grey Wagtail (second map) ringed 23rd Sep and caught here 11th Oct. Both presumably affected by SE winds

It's been fairly quiet of late, but (despite incomplete coverage) there were obviously more thrushes in today. Maybe a bit of hope for a last late rarity... Incidentally, our last rare wheatear was in 1998, and the last of our 5 Desert Wheatears was 1991.

Storm Petrel is probably Fair Isle's least well-known seabird. Read about the research that was undertaken this year to start finding out more about their population on the Isle:

THREAD Please retweet! 🕊🕊🕊 Have you photographed, or can you photograph, wild rock doves? 🐦🐦 For my PhD I’m comparing rock doves across Scotland. If you have photos of individuals or flocks it would be great to see them.

This exhausted-looking Little Auk was in North Haven yesterday. 3 Goldfinch, Brambling and a handful more Blackbirds were signs of a few birds still on the move, but it's starting to feel more winter than autumn now.
