I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.

I'm such an idiot for expecting the primary topics of foolish internet conspiracy ramblings this year would be about Trump & the elections. Instead, it's a bat virus that that has killed 213 people. Heavens! I tremble with fear at this enormous threat. 😨😱😨😱

Seeking resources for communicating data on RISK in a way that is accessible to the general public for use in decision making. In particular, low probability/high cost/high salience risks that people tend to have a hard time assessing. Any good examples/recommendations?

Question: where can I find scientific research on technological and psychological interventions to deal with distraction (especially distraction caused by digital devices)? Labs, journals, researchers, books, etc.? Can technology help us focus more?

Khan Academy () has a really nice way to visualize progress. Only issue is it's a bit hidden in the "mission progress" section.

This is a great articulation of the entire data cycle, from data design, to collection, to visualisation, to insight. The Cycle of Encoding and Decoding

OUT NOW: our first episode in 2020! We are happy that joined us to talk about "Data is not just a number. Data can be a place, or a creature, or a system, or a group of people behind the data set." Enjoy and let us know your thoughts!

This is super important and beautiful work. Read the whole thread and the links! Visualizing mental health can be useful in a myriad of ways and is in line with self-help strategies backed-up by science.

I propose a new section for visual analytics papers answering the question: "What can I learn from this that can be used in a (even slightly) different context?". Sometime I worry we are promoting a "cake baking" culture in our community (me being as guilty as anyone else).
