Demoscene effects on the NES are fun... Until you find an obscure MMC3 IRQ bug at 1AM that only happens on real hardware and MESEN (and additonally breaks another carefully timed thingy while fixing it).

This week was a trip to Sendai, complete with Hard Off of course. "Does not read discs" PC-FX just needed a lens clean hehehe.

So, that bug in Wordle's cart release is fixed. Fucking sound bankswitching gone wrong after an NMI triggered at a specific weak point I seriously hate this hardware sometimes...

During my vacation at my parents' place, I dug up my Vectrex and played a few rounds of Star Castle. I then checked the manual and saw the previous owner's high scores. So I decided to carry on with the tradition! Hopefully I'll beat Jason next year, hehehe.

Apparently some hardware revisions do not like my palette swapping effect (see pic on the right) which led me to discovering an obscure hardware bug, and also let me use a full palette swap for the HUD, hence the new and improved HUD :) #NESdev #gamedev

I was staring at a blank canvas for what's like the 6th or 7th scrap/redraw of this whole tileset for 2 days... But suddenly it clicked! Here's a little background concept I especially love how I did the lighting effect on the sills and the gargoyles :D #nesdev #gamedev

I was watching 's game design videos and decided to apply the stop effect to one of the boss fights. It does kinda work actually, hah! I'll certainly add more of that when I'll be polishing the game

Updating this tileset made me able to take a stroll in a fairly playable Glitch Heaven! The fun part is to find silly edge cases you never thought about, such as entering a lift while climbing a ladder. Answer? You climb inside a secret door 1 tile above! :P #nesdev #gamedev

Testing the new and improved level. What I like about having a non-black background colour is that while you can't really use negative space like on a black background, you can do other tricks to make your tiles more vivid :) #nesdev #gamedev

Currently writing autotile code for this improved level. This one's a bit of a pain because since my metatiles are 32x32, I gotta account for rare edge cases such as a "crate of vodka on the edge of a floor" and make unique tiles/autotile bytecode for it as well. #nesdev #gamedev

By the power of the Hard Off Coupon, I got a beautiful "Junk" Ikegami for FREE!!! Hard Off staff was likely clueless as to why there's no picture without inputs, hehehe... Picture's great and it has RGB. Sadly some slight burn-in but hey it was free so I won't complaint

Aaaaand the overhauled level is playetested, no bad surprises since it was heavily based on the old one anyway (Hence why it took so quick to make). I just gotta fill the crates tomorrow I guess, cuz if they're empty they freeze the game๐Ÿ™ˆ #nesdev #gamedev

New favourite NES pixelart effect: Using the same background tiles but 1 level dimmer. Funny how such a simple effect can give the illusion of a building in the background engulfed in a fog-like effect :D #nesdev #gamedev #pixelart

I knew this day would come - Since I did a tileset overhaul the other day, why not replace the last tilesets that I don't like anymore. There's this one & another one that are gonna get overhauled! Can't wait to see it gone through the autotiling process to make it look nicer :D

This is actually something I learned in . Rather than having a mess of lots of colours, sometimes less is more. Some people thought it made Mine Mayhem (LD48, right) cluttered, whereas Super Crusher Fighters (LD50, left) feels cleaner :)

Overhauled a tileset (Used in 3 huge levels, of course...๐Ÿ˜’) to better use BG colouring. In the old one (on the right), it was a mess of differently-coloured bricks that was a bit of an eyesore after a while. So I separated them in areas of 2 colours which I think looks way nicer

Foreground layer added! Think it came out rather decent with quite a few NES tricks. Think it has over 30 colours! Now to add it to the game and add the credits part to it as well (Not gonna show this one yet :P) #nesdev #gamedev

Progress during my break: The tower, clouds, and all of the fog that's not on the topmost row are sprites - All 64 in fact! Perfect to make the tower crumble and make the credits roll over the sprite "background" after you blow up the gulag hehehe #nesedev #gamedev

When I first made this publisher splash screen, I thought there was simply no way I could optimise the timing enough for PAL. Well, a few years later and here we are. After a raycaster optimising ASM becomes a second nature lol #nesdev #gamedev

Currently doing code optimisation at work so I tried to optimise Space Soviets on my break. While testing slowdown-proofing, I added "Micronics Mode" just for fun and it's even "better" than I expected๐Ÿ˜‚ Almost wanna add a code so you too can try this monstrosity #nesdev #gamedev
