To be clear it is not just a society that allows the individual but rather the plurality of different social groups, so that the social memetic code defining each of us can be different. Thus it is the diversity and complexity of modernity that allows the individual to emerge.

Same could be argued about startups: incumbents are not disrupted by any one startup or entrepreneur. Rather, they succumb to relentless evolutionary pressure from the startup ecosystem.

Yes the problem is that most people in the ALONE paradigm, such as economists and libertarians and me until pretty recently, have not absorbed the basic lessons of sociology
