And FYI, many of us are not eligible to collect certain benefits or apply for govt housing because of our record. If you won't hire us and the govt won't assist us, what do you propose? That we just crawl into a ditch to die? THAT'S why we reoffend, because we gave no choice.

Because your “bad life choices” victimize other people and deprive them of their rights and freedoms. Make the choices you want, but the second they affect others negatively, they will oppose you and want you gone. This is a normal and natural response for every normal creature.
