Weird British culture things that Brits genuinely have no concept are weird until we visit another country & discover that practically no one else does that: Tea. We are literally obsessed by tea (made with boiling water, obv) & we don't even notice how weird that is.

British employers understand they have to provide the means of making tea to their workers; at the very least, a supply of boiling water & a fridge for milk. The British army is the only army in the world that has a gadget for boiling water attached its armoured cars. For tea. /3

And we do not regard this as at all weird. We go to other countries & we do like "But you don't have a KETTLE? How do you make TEA?" never mind that in most countries if you plug an electric kettle into the household socket it will take longer to boil than in the UK. /4

I do remember the shock of coming to the US and no one had a jug kettle. I was forced to boil water in a saucepan like a fucking savage. Now my American wife won't do without.

I'm a tea person, and just got back from a week in Liverpool/Scotland. The ubiquity of tea infrastructure was life-giving. Our Edinburgh B&B had FIVE kinds of black tea in the room, an electric kettle and actual milk in the little single-serving cups, not "creamer." Bliss.

Reminded of a) how Austrian headmistress at my 70's Wolverhampton school was given kettle as leaving present & it was an object of wonder in her home village b) how Cruachan hydro power station exists for mass kettle switching on in TV commercial breaks

@nationalgriduk Do you have any blog posts about how powerstations used to be spun up to generate enough electricity for kettles during ad breaks in Coronoation Street? Because I seem to remember this was a thing.Hvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi

Waitaminute.. is the voltage in Britain twice that of North America solely because Brits want to boil their water twice as fast?!
