Proper block/dodge mechanics are essential to a good hack and slash. The player needs to be able to do it immediately upon a button press without any significant delay. In Ninja Gaiden, you can't dodge or block in the middle of a combo, which is a huge problem.

You're supposed to be able to throw off a few shuriken and then launch into a combo, except I can't get the fucking thing to work. There's a bow, too, but they somehow expect you to manually aim in first person while a bunch of fast shinobi are trying to cut your head off.

I'm fighting a demon horse on the bridge, and there are a billion Magikoopa kind of enemies infinitely respawning and throwing energy balls at me. The horse keeps charging with all piss and vinegar and the delayed block/dodge roll make staying alive very difficult.

I love the game what exactly is troubling you, i can help you cause i know the mechanics
-
My question is a broad one: how do you play it? There's a serious lack of communication as far as the general combat goes.
-
Patience and movement is key. Also dodging then jumping right after is a must do due to mobility. Running up and on walls is a good approach and defensive option. Look at the combos on your sword and experiment. Ya its really tough at first but once you get it its pretty fun

Did that help you

I got to the third level, and suddenly it got a lot easier. I also just found a list of techniques by pressing Y next to the Dragon Sword.
-
So there is 3 types of essence, red blue and yellow. Red fills your nimpo, blue heals and yellow is currency. this ties to your charged y attack...
-
When holding y you have 3 stages, 1 is you do a weak slash that homes in, 2 is a stronger and has invulnrability and goes through targets too 3 is the same as 2 but on first hit with a target unleashes a flury of strikes that can't be interrupted. Essence affects this...
-
When charging you suck up essence and it speeds up the charge. Yellow increases by 1 stage of it and blue and red automatic go to full charge. Also if you get a kill with a stage 3 enemies drop huge yellow essence that is never dropped normally. That concludes this explanation

yeah this is why the NES games are superior. I heard Sigma on Vita is the best version, but I don't know if it improves the difficulty/controls
-
Black is the best version.
-
Huh? I though Sigma Plus was because it was newer. Is it because Black includes the SNES/Arcade Ninja Gaiden games? (Those are only on the Xbox ones, right)

Ninja glider rules, stick with it. You playing OG ninja gaiden or ninja gaiden black? I played both back in the day to completion and you’re better off going with Black
