Today is a sad day...
The save battery in my copy of Smash 64 died, meaning everything got deleted.

Yeah, a lot of N64 carts use an internal battery to save their games, and they're known to die like that. Happens with Gameboy carts too
Shoutouts to my dragon quest monsters 2 save being lost in post-game every. Single. Time.
Cartridges with battery backup work this way: Reprogrammable chip keeps save info, chip requires power to hold save, tiny watch battery powers the chip so the save doesn't get lost. Once that battery is drained the chip is no longer powered and instantly loses the save.
It always feels spooky to me that any battery backup cartridge I have has an actively powered chip inside at all times.
