Most first marriages across recorded hunter-gatherer societies are arranged marriages where young girls (avg: ~14) r exchanged for goods or labor from older husband and/or his kin. Lot of evolutionary accounts of human mating out there that don't recognize implications of thispic.twitter.com/gwkdLTnGj3

have you seen this article from @PsychoSchmitt?https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/sexual-personalities/201602/the-no-voice-in-mate-choice-myth …

I agree that people certainly exercise choice as well (males more able to generally than females), even within the confines of social systems that promote arranged marriages (I talked about that as well a bit here: https://quillette.com/2018/06/07/explaining-monogamy-vox/ … ).pic.twitter.com/eki2Rw2Ebf

But I would be wary of relying too heavily on SCCS codes in particular (not wrong just subject to lots of interpretation), I also suspect Schmitt and I disagree on which explanations to prioritize (choice vs arranged). Also Sex at Dawn was really badly wrong about a lot IMO

Do any other animals (other than perhaps other apes) select sexual partners for their offspring? (I'm thinking longlived animals like elephants, maybe?) So humans have been able to (somewhat) consciously choose the direction we take evolutionarily? That's some heavy shit, man.

Bonobo mothers help their sons get more mating opportunities http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/278/1705/590 … but it's quite a bit different from this.

No those things matter too, I just think female choice in particular has often been highly constrained across cultures, and the evidence for that seems pretty strong to me but not often grappled with

You'd expect selection pressures in such cases to make parental and daughter preferences to be more aligned, given there still seem to be a substantial difference between them we can assume female choice mattered to some extent.

Why wouldn’t the extent be life defining? Over and over again, it seems perfectly reasonable that when that choice is threatened or take, the feeling seems to be that suicide is preferable. This is in a lot of cultures, in particular ours which is the most indulgent.

I daughters routinely killed themselves rather than marrying the man their parents arranged for them that would provide pretty strong selection pressures for parental and daughter preferences to become more similar over time.

What hunter gatherer mom would want her daughter mating up with the guy who can’t hit the side of a mountain with an atlatl?
