I hear claims like this repeated a lot. Can anyone familiar with the literature tell me if it's true that the welfare state contributed to breakdown in African American families, and via this and other mechanisms inhibited racial gaps from being closed? I'm sceptical.https://twitter.com/ThomasSowell/status/1115759725495373826 …
And of course, the literally critically evaluating Thomas and Williams is more than still welcome. Though at the end of the day, cutting the welfare state aren't likely to be politics I'd support! But Murray seems to be taking these arguments in a pro-UBI direction instead.

Yes, that's exactly my read too. But replacing the existing welfare state with a new, nuch more generous, and not means tested welfare state seems like a trade I can happily support.

There has been critique of institutional racism in child welfare policy which separates families. https://scholarlycommons.law.northwestern.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=&httpsredir=1&article=1003&context=njlsp …

I guess this would bolster Murray's critique of the status quo (he thinks social workers do more harm than good), and his UBI proposals as a replacement (given they don't suffer from this problem)
