Perhaps there was a scriptural / theological basis for these ideas?

NO ONE should have their sense of self worth and meaning tied to their participation in paid employment. The fact that our society has pushed this lie for generations is horrific, and causes very real harm.

    - or that the consequences of us not being able to find such a ground aren't so severe (eg maybe there's still a way we can justify these political values absent meta-ethics)

To find a meta-ethical ground for this basic egalitarianism (and for other sociopolitical values we hold dear) is a cause I endeavour to contribute to. I just hope it can be done

I think this is a good definition: How do we establish the innate equality of moral worth in human beings, in spite of a) differences between human beings (through nature, nurture, and their choices), and b) the fact humans are more valuable than animals?

And of course, the literally critically evaluating Thomas and Williams is more than still welcome. Though at the end of the day, cutting the welfare state aren't likely to be politics I'd support! But Murray seems to be taking these arguments in a pro-UBI direction instead.

I wonder if anyone can point me in a good direction to find the literature evaluting these claims. And I specifically do not mean the genetics stuff (which I should look into at another date), but those more akin to what he argued in, say, Losing Ground and Coming Apart.

Upon doing a little digging, it seems that that if one wants a social-scientifically serious defence of these claims - besides Thomas Sowell and Walter E Williams, has written at length for decades on the matter (and not only looking at African Americans)

to trade - and that includes trading our labour. And that may in turn entail agreeing to have our labour organised by someone else - albeit true agreement, chosen where there is no material compulsion on us to work.

I don't think humans have any intrinsic desire to sell or rent ourselves out to others, and I hope to one day see a world where we move past that. But I think, on top of the freedoms you've just outlined, there is something of an intrinsic human impulse not just to produce but

As an aside, this may also be a good demonstration of how pluralist liberalism may accord more freedoms than rationalist liberalism. Laïcité, in its drive to supposedly enhance freedom and equality, may deprive Muslim women of their political agency.

But there's another concern here too. In railing against or reforming America too much, we may end up killing the goose which lays the golden eggs. That is, end up undermining the extent to which it accords political agency to women and members of minority religious groups. 5/5

Maybe some degree of gratitude on our part is in order, even if might be (greatly) outweighed by the degree of righteous anger which is also in order. And to be fair to the Squad, they often venerate America too - perhaps even too much! 4/5

They (and I) frequently rail against America. And we have much cause in so doing But it is America / the west which has given us the freedom to do what we do and be who are. 3/5

I can't help but take stock of the fact that this degree of political agency would not be afforded to Muslim women anywhere in the Muslim world (let alone to women from minority religions in those countries), and probably not in many other places within the west either. 2/5

I think it's absolutely great that they're doing this, incorporating mosques into the little platoons of American civil society. Beyond this, it is also no secret that I'm political supporters of these women more generally. However 1/5
