Pobiner on the power of teaching human evolution: "Teaching future doctors or dietitians? Talk about the evolution of malarial resistance or lactose tolerance. Teaching athletes? Talk about the evolution of running. Teaching in a rural area? Talk about agricultural practices..."

A reframe: Darwin gave us a starting point. He knew he didn't have all the information he needed to completely understand (hint: neither do we, 160yrs later). No one is more bothered by this than Darwin was. (Here's a passage I like from Gene by ):

The short answer to Was Darwin wrong? Yes! But! not about everything AND that's okay! This is like asking if got stuff wrong. YES. Being wrong is a part of science. It's built into the scientific method, & is why peer review is part of the scientific process.

We're learning more about evolution every day, with every fossil we find, every genome we sequence. A lot of new knowledge prompts people to ask whether Darwin was "wrong." asked me this yesterday:

Charles Darwin's voyage on the Beagle began in 1831. The five-year trek around the world shaped his ideas about the natural world. He later said that the journey was "by far the most important event in my life."

Excellent read about the distinction between belief and the scientific way of knowing (how we know what we know)
