A strongman leader hiding his next steps just long enough to stay in power. Shady companies waiting in the wings to cash in. Sound familiar? Yup, it’s time for another edition of South Dakota’s nuclear waste dump history, courtesy of my dad.

Journalism in China is no different. Chinese journalists are no different. They are well used to taking the heat. They are well used to finding the cracks that let the light in. They will keep doing it.

At the end of the day, journalism everywhere is basically about bringing the truth to light as objectively as possible, even when it will have blowback for someone because a government body, a corporate interest, a powerful individual, or their own boss doesn't like it.

More than 13 years on, I believe the work of Chinese journalists, and of journalists in China, is more important and urgent than ever. But my opinion on whether folks (often non-Chinese) who leave ought to keep their mouths shut has evolved a great deal.

Back in 2009, a friend wrote a piece about internal censorship at a top Chinese media organization, Caijing, as she left. I was livid, arguing it put some of China's best journalists – the few able to thread the needle of ever-tightening state controls – at risk.

There’s plenty of blame to go around in the C-suites of BuzzFeed and Insider, which are laying off journalists while dabbling with AI. But we are all playing a rigged game inside the platforms’ casino. Digital journalism has to be commercially rational.

Kurt Cobain died 29 years ago today. He suffered chronic pain. Wrote in his journal that he chose drugs instead of ending his own life. Buprenorphine worked for him, as it does for many today. But it was illegal then. When his physician died in 93 he was caught off. RIP Kurdt
A photo from Kurt Cobain's diary that starts "I bought a gun but chose drugs instead." He then goes on to describe detox is torture and how buprenorphine helped him.

What’s the best / cheapest way to maintain a US non-VoIP phone number that I can receive 2FA codes to internationally? Used to use Google Voice for this, but most services now disallow VoIP numbers, and don’t want to pay 50$ a month + roaming just to get text messages.

In today's official media coverage of the National People's Congress — a good example of catchphrase creation. Appearing for the first time ever is Xi's "Two Must-Haves" (两个必保): 1) a dependable grain/food supply not vulnerable to int'l mkts, 2) a firm manufacturing industry.

Pro-GM camp slowly but surely gaining ground in Beijing. Also worth noting these approvals have been on diplomatic & chamber of commerce ask lists for ages. A nice little pre-LNY gift.

Love it when people discover China's standard seed display bottles for the first time. Have never got to the (ahem) bottom (ahem) of why they use these inverted ones but they're ubiquitous at ag expos.

I talked to 7 women, all Asian international students, who said Dybvig sexually harassed them. From flirty emails to unwanted kissing and touching, their stories span at least a decade. Many said it was an open secret among female Chinese students.
