Trump’s wall shutdown is a case study for populist governance. Leader makes ridiculous campaign promise to exploit voter anxiety, comes to power, faces mounting corruption probes, then tries desperately to implement the promise to keep base, causing broad government dysfunction.

He made a promise he can’t keep without basically taking the Rio Grande, as a water source, away from all of the ranchers and farmers along 1200 miles of Texas, and giving that water to Mexico for free.🤷🏻‍♀️pic.twitter.com/hS59t68WH6

He made a campaign promise without doing the research (consulting Army Corps of Engineers, topography, Hells Bells... even a simple map of the Rio Grande.) He wrote a check that even the best civil engineers can’t cash for him w/o HURTING AMERICAN RANCHERS in a huge Red State.

The Texas-Mexico border is LITERALLY the “deepest channel in the middle of the Rio Grande” for 1,200 of the 1,900+ border. Mexico would never allow us to build alongside the river on THEIR side. Therefore, we have to build alongside US SIDE.

The wall doesn’t have to be on the border. It can be set back 100s or 1000s of feet. We would control both sides.

We could set the wall several thousand miles from the border. Make it just long enough to surround the white house and save billions $

Don’t forget the miles of tunnels already dug beneath the existing segments of walls—most who have entry and exit points far removed from the border wall itself.

This is why @MittRomney it's impossible to agree w/ Trump. Regardless of whether or not you think we need a wall, Trump's motives & methods are & always will be suspect. If you really care about border security & immigration reform you would free yourself from Trump's demagoguery

So...it’s a ridiculous campaign promise to want to secure the border? It’s ridiculous to actually want to do something Congress voted overwhelmingly for in 2006? The depths of your suckage have no limits Evan.

Address his question. I'd love to hear it. How do you build along the US side of the Rio Grande without stealing private property from US citizens? Or depriving them of their irrigation needs?

Also, “securing the border” and “building a wall” are not necessarily the same things. The current proposal does include $ for border security.

A national emergency would need to be voted on by Congress so there is that. I somehow don't see Pelosi going along for the ride.

He's done. You're seeing moderate GOP senators like Lamar Alexander and Cory Gardner openly distancing themselves now. We're in the end game and it's just a matter of how it plays out.

Their distancing, like McMullin's, is lukewarm. Until GOP members literally start saying "crimes must be impeached" and "this is not republicanism" and "yay America, boo Russia" it will never be the end game. they are praying for a heart attack to save them from exertion.
