  1. My deep sympathy to the victims of the heinous attack on The Tree of Life Synagogue and to the African-Americans killed by another white supremacist in Louisville this week. We must hold leaders accountable for the hateful, nationalist rhetoric & policies inspiring this violence.

  2. We shouldn't still be surprised that Trump won't rise to the level of his office and unify the country. Instead we should be clear-eyed about this: He is committed to turning us against each other so that we're too weak to hold him accountable. Whether he succeeds is up to us.

America has lost its most well-known Maverick. And it’s a position we need to fill. Today we begin a journey to rally all people to stand up and to serve a cause greater than themselves. Get in the arena.

When Americans from opposing political tribes are arguing over which side uses the most violence-inducing rhetoric, we’re all losing. We need leaders who unite and heal divisions. The reality is that the President has the biggest megaphone to do so. He instead inflames the hate.

A wise man said this to me today: “The next political tribe in America will care about everyone.”

The words of our president matter. They shape minds, inspire action, build movements, and impact the nature of our society. Political violence often begins with leaders' dehumanizing words and this president bears responsibility for his.

The President is talking about our fellow Americans here. As yesterday’s attempted bombings show, his dehumanization of the media puts their lives at risk. There is no policy, legislation or appointment worth supporting a man who endangers our lives for his own perceived benefit.

Thank you to our first responders and leaders who are stepping up to address these attempted attacks and protect those targeted and other potential victims. It is not too soon for us to reject the divisive, dehumanizing rhetoric that opens the door to such violence. We must now.

This is the one of the things you get when a president stokes hate — against opponents, critics, the press, and democracy’s institutions.

Yesterday’s indictment of another Russian involved in ongoing disinformation targeting our democracy is a reminder of a still under-appreciated fact: Moscow and Trump both rely on cultural flashpoints including race and immigration to divide Americans and advance shared goals.

New: CIA officials have heard audio that Turks say paints a much different story about Khashoggi’s death than the one the Saudis are telling. Saudi claims that he died in a “brawl” draw immediate skepticism.

The Saudis never would have dreamt of committing such a heinous crime against a journalist with an American publication under prior U.S. administrations. Trump’s dehumanizing, violent rhetoric against the press has signaled to despots an open season for such abuses.

Claims that Jamal Khashoggi was merely killed in a “fistfight” with 15 Saudi agents who flew to “meet” him and the notion that such a consequential operation would be executed without orders from the highest levels of the Saudi government are not credible.

We can give the Saudi government a couple of additional days to own, explain or deny their apparent murder of a journalist, but the United States of America cannot excuse or cover for such an atrocity. If we do, we assume indirect responsibility for human rights abuses worldwide.
