Have been on Kangaroo Island for two days but it feels like a month. Nothing could have prepared me for this. We're non-stop in the field searching for wildlife survivors in apocalyptic landscapes. Air is thick with ash and death, but I wouldn't be anywhere else

  2. is hitting wildlife hard and flying-foxes are among the worst affected. Heatwaves are killing thousands, and fires are burning their habitats while roosts are being destroyed for amenity. We need to swing the balance back in nature's favour and it has to happen now

We left water in the hope it could keep them going long enough for life to bounce back. This one was a water station regular who became known as Tiges - when we knew where he was we relaxed a little. Another amazing wildlife survivor with the odds now against him

Got a bit too close for comfort to a few tiger snakes during search and rescue on - their resemblance to burned wood in the ash was slightly unnerving! All kept to themselves and appeared healthy, but were hunting in areas seemingly devoid of prey

My colleague on one of the big problems with our freedom of information system. Includes our latest attempts to FOI Josh Frydenberg and Angus Taylor’s offices about the Jam Land affair.

HSI is extremely concerned at shocking reports of koalas dying on a recently logged property in Victoria. As authorities investigate we're urgently organising our response and reaching out to wildlife carers saving injured koalas to offer support

Fell in love with a wombat named Shivers today ❤️ Her mum's death was so traumatic she shook for days after being rescued by the phenomenal Donna and family at Sleepy Burrows. Thanks to them Shivers is back to her playful, curious, milk guzzling self with her pain a fading memory

We're out in fire ravaged areas around Canberra getting assistance to wildlife carers on the front lines working 24/7 to care for survivors like these kangaroos in urgent care at sanctuary Possumwood. HSI is here to help the helpers for the long term

Boulder tragically lost her mum in the and was badly burned during her own escape. Very glad to report she's in safe hands at sanctuary , where Greg and Justine are giving her the care she needs to get back out living her best life

Once the danger's passed echidnas use an array of prey detection adaptations in their snouts such as electroreceptors and push rods to find food (mostly ants and termites) with ease. This one was waddling a metre and dipping his snout into the ash on repeat, then hit the jackpot!

Echidnas' unusual musculature helps them get out of reach of fire fast. Incredibly strong limbs and backward facing hind feet mean they can dig straight down and deal with obstacles rapidly. With tolerance to ⬆️ carbon dioxide and ⬇️ oxygen they can hunker down until they're safe

Didn't know it was possible, but have even more respect for after . They're so well adapted to fires and the aftermath, and seeing healthy survivors waddling about the landscape seemingly without a care in the world never failed to put smiles on our faces

Tragic on so many levels. James is a long-term member of our network and one of the most dedicated wildlife carers around (and that's saying something). is here to help him and other carers recoup and rebuild. Please don't hesitate to reach out for support.

A pleasure to join Prof. Chris Dickman and to discuss the ongoing emergency on . Australia's extinction crisis is in overdrive and our laws are under review. We have the opportunity, the time to act is now

HSI takes a strong position on unnecessary interference with wildlife, and this wasn't a typical rescue. The koala is a strong candidate for early release when suitable habitat is found, but if we'd left it out there its most likely fate was road strike or death by dehydration.

Photographer Adam Ferguson, in the field for , captured this dramatic moment that both I and the koala started moving. Within seconds the koala was in hand and secured, quickly calming and ready to be transported for veterinary assessment. This was not a chase situation

The HSI team made a judgement call for me to make a wide circle around the koala and approach slowly. It remained still and in apparent confusion as I walked up – a clear sign of distress and dehydration as koalas would not normally allow a person this close in the wild

Startled by the near miss the koala slowly walked about 20 metres from the road as we observed from afar, but was heading through thick ash past dozens of kangaroo and other koala bodies towards a completely devastated area where we knew there was no food or water for kilometres

As one of the rescue teams was returning to the emergency veterinary clinic with another koala on board that we'd just seen and easily picked up as we left the plantations, I had to brake suddenly to avoid this one that was sitting dazed in the middle of the highway

My heart is broken for the people and animals in this story, and the countless others who have suffered similarly. The impacts of this ongoing disaster are indescribably catastrophic... Also feel a bit of context behind the moment pictured is needed:
