As much as the problems with his confirmation testimony were highlighted in public, he was still a big part of the campaign (head of foreign policy) and per DOJ procedures would be required to recuse from an investigation into the campaign in any event.

True, this. Also true that Sessions was one of the first “serious” Republicans to get on the Trump Train, giving momentum to his candidacy while there was still time to stop it. He’s a villain, but yes, there’s some sliver of honor there.
