When Trump maligns Mueller, he’s not only testing the water for removing him, he’s building support for it in his base, making it more difficult for Republicans in Congress to oppose it. That’s why it’s so important that we and they speak loudly against Trump’s attacks now.

This is Trump’s modus operandi. He attacks a person or a group of people, often leveraging extreme partisanship or fear, until his base is ready to let him go further or demands that he does, which is his desire from the beginning.

When it gets to that point, many Republican politicians are too afraid of Trump’s base to defend our ideals, norms, and institutions. And this is how his nationalist, populist rhetoric was able to reach a fever pitch in 2015 and 2016. Few in the GOP were willing to take a stand.

We would be fools to simply hope that more Republican leaders would somehow summon that courage now. We must make them understand that they will pay an electoral price for their cowardice and self-interest if they fail to defend the the special counsel investigation now.

They are worried if they offend him too bad he will either push primary challengers or will leave to form a Trump party and that losing his hardcore 20% will lose them elections. Leadership is doing the right thing when it is hard to do There is no leadership left in the GOP

What the GOP need more than ever is a time in the wilderness of electoral loss to rediscover themselves and separate from the extremists on the right that have brought them here.

But the ongoing question in my head is why are they scared of Trumps 20% base? They say it’s 30% but I don’t count the Russians. Also... 30% of his 20% are former Obama voters so therefore they won’t stick easily.

Because without that critical 20% they lose elections pretty much everywhere- it’s a closely divided political scene, where a small but cohesive % of folks can control a lot. See for example the Freedom Caucus in the House.

The use of any public office to put factional interest, or an official’s desire to escape punishment for actual crimes, ahead of the Constitution is a criminal abuse of office. Any public office holder who does not understand this risks operating outside the law.

Trump's behavior and conduct at this point would be grounds for any child, teen being expelled from public/private school. Constant lies, his vindictive, threatening conduct falls in line w corrupt criminality. Those who condone this should follow him to jail.
