Let me stop you right there, @Evan_McMullin. One of the reasons why I voted for you, and did so specifically as a protest vote, is becausehttps://twitter.com/evan_mcmullin/status/943161444316704768 …

You miss Frum’s point. Of course those of us who haven’t abandoned our principles want conservatism to mean what it always has to us. But the reality is there are now more supporters of Trumpism claiming conservatism than there are adherents of founding principles doing the same.

We will go on telling people what we think conservatism is, but we may lose the battle for that word simply because there are more of them than there are of us. The most broadly understood meaning of the word will be driven by the definition that the majority ascribe to it.

I would prefer that conservatism describe the defense of founding principles, but Trumpism is appropriating the word to itself. In the end, what matters more than anything else is our commitment to our principles even if we end up having to use new words to describe it.

No matter how successful Trumpism is in claiming the term “conservative” to itself, it will never be able to do the same with our actual values, namely liberty and equality. We must own and defend those ideals to the end no matter what changes in American politics.
