I take no pleasure in this. As long as we’re a two party system, we should all want both parties to be healthy, decent and committed to liberty, equality, and truth. Unfortunately, it may only be this loss of support that forces the GOP back to those values.https://twitter.com/numbersmuncher/status/937688545954803713 …

You may be right and, if so, our country will experience even more challenges in the near to mid-term. My view is that we should still fight hard to pull the GOP back. If we fail, we’ll still be better prepared for what’s needed in the future.

You are lying to yourself if you think the GOP reflected those values before Trump. What Trump has done very effectively is to shine a light on who and what R's are, and have been, for decades - selfish, hate-filled, bigots who are motivated by greed, spite, and supremacy.

The GOP has long had problems. I and others have been pressing for reforms for a long time from the inside. It was once the party of Lincoln. We would be all be well served if it were once again.

Exactly. I thought that was too low... like the 33% approval rating’s being too high

Instead of protecting their party the GOP handed it over to fascism/kleptocracy because individually & collectively they lack integrity and have for a very long time. They should have forced the extremists among them to start their own party.

A party either has values or it does not. If it has to be forced to return to values due to loss of support, it didn't really have these values to begin with.

If Americans don’t turn out to vote, does it really matter which party they align themselves to?

Yes, party affiliation matters a great deal in the primary process. Too few voters even participate in primaries and that leads to candidates that reflect an activist minority, often at the fringe of the party, winning the primary and being party’s candidate in general election.
