With all due respect, you're underestimating his racist, sexist behavior in 2016. Went much further than HRC. His target is and has always been women and minorities. White patriarchy is his ideology.
Whether by instinct or design, Trump's racially charged comments are meant to inspire his supporters to despise other Americans more than they may otherwise grow to dislike him. In 2016, Hillary was his foil. In 2018 and 2020, it will be minorities.

It is just division tactic. Prevents groups from coming together and uniting against him. That is his goal. If all groups Ally against him he is done. His survival relies on fracturing those against him.

It's not just that, though. I've lurked in the forums that particular life form lives in. Trump is amoral and apolitical but they are not. And many of them associate w/people who are easily led back into the dark alleys of racism and bigotry.
