Maybe "reigning in spending" isn't anybody's actual goal. Just something republicans claim to care about when they're not in charge.

If we only didn't get into an unpaid for 16 year old war things might be different.

A contributory factor for sure, but not as much as you might think. Defense = 16% of federal spending. Entitlements = 48%
