I don't think there is a conflict. If leg uses redistricting to violate rights protected by const, then court is empowered to intervene.

How about make all the districts fall within a certain mathematical formula for how square/regularly shaped they are?

A child can see that gerrymandering is terrible for democracy. If SCOTUS is fair in ruling, our founders may quit turning in their graves.
