The caricature fits only because so many "conservatives" have abandoned the principles on which the GOP was founded.
I disagree with the notion that liberty, equality, and self-rule are fundamentally left-wing ideas. They were founding GOP principles.

But GOP wasn't founded as right wing... Lincoln's party was explicitly *progressive* until 1880s; briefly again 1900-20; then never again...

Party cannot be conflated with ideology, and so it's ludicrous for Conservatives to claim progressive heroes who happened to be republicans.

I like to think that those ideas are common to any democratic (small d) philosophy. Differences tend to be in implementation.
