I’m seeing a lot of tweets like this from people who supported impeachment. If you actually believed acquittal would strengthen the president, why were you for impeachment, when acquittal was the obvious outcome?https://twitter.com/EvanMcMullin/status/1223251687411871744 …

Some consequences if Trump is acquitted: —Congress loses power to check president —Foreign backing of presidential candidates normalized —Presidential use of tax dollars for personal gain normalized —President is effectively above the law —Attacks on US democracy grow

Because the damage would have been even worse in all of these respects had the president not even been impeached, had Congress done nothing. Much worse. Also, expecting the system to fail is a great way to ensure that it always does.

The correct answer is that failure to convict does not embolden future misdeeds, but rather clarifies the choices voters have before them in November, to remove the Senators who did not vote to convict, and especially those who did not even vote for witnesses.

And if the Democrats refused to impeach a president as corrupt as Trump, then we would know they are as corrupt and political as the GOP ... merely waiting for their turn as pigs at the trough. They did the right thing regardless of the consequences.

Correct. There was no obvious path here, as far as avoiding condoning implicitly this corrupt behavior. But neglecting to impeach certainly would have done so.

Also, it was extremely important to lay bare for millions of Americans who hadn't been paying attention just how dire our situation is—how fully the GOP is committed to holding onto power at all costs and installing an authoritarian.

I have to say, imagining no impeachment process at all for Trump, and thus foregoing evidence, witness testimony and everything on the record, and that still seems worse even without removal.

It - at the least - puts that asterisk besides Trump's administration for history - this was a President who was impeached.
