Because though bernie is appealing to progressives, the average moderate person who may have voted for Trump and now uncomfortable with him would not vote for Bernie. We are a center-left or center-right country at most

Every piece of information that exists says otherwise. Democrats ran a moderate in ‘04 & ‘16 and lost both. Democrats ran Obama (who campaigned as a progressive) in ‘08 and won. For a Democrat to win you need to bring out young people and typical non-voters, Bernie does that.
