An excellent piece on how Trump cowed Republican congressman, but most aren’t victims here. Most left the party vulnerable to his rise by failing for years to actively instill American values in the base. By the time Trump came along, it was too late.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/21/us/politics/trump-impeachment-republicans.html …

In other words, it must resoundingly repudiate Trump and Trumpism. I once thought the GOP would have to change its name, but that would be a surrender. If there’s going to be a rebirth of the party, it must also involve a reclamation of the Party of Lincoln and its sacred legacy.

Psst. White supremacy and authoritarianism have been what the GOP has been about (with the addition of crony capitalism) for over 20 years. Trump just took advantage by saying the formerly silent parts out loud.

Y'all need to start a new party. The GOP is forever ruined.

The GOP *might* not be forever ruined, but creating a new party allows principled conservatives to start fighting back now. IMO, moderates should support the Democratic nominee, but people who can't stomach that should have a 3rd party to vote for.

Good luck with that, truly. I would not have had a problem if McCain had won, or Romney. I was even ok with Bush; all because I never doubted their patriotism. But this, this is some next level betrayal to our nation.

I'd much prefer the return of the WHIG party than see the GOP survive the sins they've committed.

You’re going to have to build a new party. Just psychologically alone, you have at least two full generations that will never associate it with anything but lying, horribleness, authoritarianism, and corruption. I know that’s insanely difficult, but that’s where we’re at.

GenX here - two and a HALF generations. I can’t say it’s so for ALL of us, but we saw what Reaganomics did, and some of us remembered.
