If there’s to be a healthy GOP in the future, its leaders will need to actively espouse, model and even compel its alignment with core American values, ejecting the white supremacists, their sympathizers, and the admirers of authoritarianism to attract a new coalition of support.
No doubt, it started with the “tea party” movement which was clearly actually rooted in racism given we hear nothing from that wing of @GOP in the days when trump keeps adding uncontrollably to the national debt
This was further compounded by the Republican-accepted birther movement against Obama. McCain tried his best to stop it in ‘08, but the seed was planted too firmly and @GOP allowed it to fester and metastasize after that because it fired up the “base”
In all those yrs only McCain pushed back: by then too little too late. Trumps @gop has been in making for decades: gerrymandering, voter suppression, @senatemajldr weakening democracy by obstructing Obama. Capitulating to racism, sexism in base not leading; big $$ in elections...
The GOP has continually been a shrinking party. In the 60's to bulk up the party they welcomed the religious right - which Goldwater warned against. Then in the age of Obama, GOP welcomed the racist Tea Party. Along the way conservative ideology was left behind.
I think the seeds were in the belittlement of government that came with the Reagan years. If the party has contempt for government it doesn’t care what you do or respect the institutions or good intentions. It has been a slow crawl downward till we came to this.
Yes. And their refusal to separate religion from government fed a beast that consumes everything. While they had their base busy with their religious fear mongering they systematically undermined democracy
