That's it EXACTLY. It's not "party over country" as is often stated. It's "personal power over defending the Constitution." They fear their loss of power, press attention, Fox News appearances, self-importance.

As others have noted, the GOP at this point is a gang, a cartel. It exists, not to advance a particular political perspective, but to ensure that its members retain power. That is the only purpose for which it exists, and like other dirty cartels, it will do anything to succeed.

Things I never expected to be saying: I miss having responsible, reasonable Republicans in Congress. Those with whom I might disagree on some issues (and sometimes even agree with them), but whose loyalty to country was never in doubt.

Yup. I may have disagreed with Bob Dole on almost every issue, but I never questioned his loyalty to the Constitution.

In their pursuit of the maintenance of power, they are ceding all of it, to ONE man. A man, with loyalties to no one but himself. A man who favors authoritarianism over Democracy. A man who doesn’t owe any of these fools, anything, beyond their usefulness in giving him power.

That's absolutely it. The preservation of their own power. And they'll betray everything this country has stood for since its inception to do it.
