    The election of 2000 was a democratic debacle forcing the Supreme Court to appoint the president. The overreaction to it has only made things worse. ’s article is required reading.

    Seriously. This is a sobering and necessary read. It lingers. We put our national tech resources and greatest minds on targeting ads and peddling influence for the past 18 years. Not counting votes.

    To give you a sense of who’s a big fan of the hit piece on Cadwalladr. This troll mounted a violent personal attack on her using official campaign infrastructure. That attack and the ones from the Russian government were not mentioned in the hit piece.

    I can think of only one other occasion where I saw a story from a major news org covering subject access requests and the data scandal in question that didn’t appropriately reach out to me for comment. This bizarre take is now wisely locked away in the Bloomberg subscriber vault.

    You can see from these DMs that the reporter sees his job as calling out what he believes is improper behavior in the industry. Well, maybe a more rigorous reporter should be put on that beat? They don’t respond to criticism but they sure do dish it out.

    I was, well, a bit wary. This exchange is from the early hours of Aug 1. The tweet that prompted it has since been deleted.

    Is it arrogant of me to insist I should’ve been interviewed for the piece? Maybe. But if it wasn’t for me, there would be no criminal prosecution of Cambridge Analytica. So there’s that.

    Finally, I took what action I believed was necessary to protect sources. One of them took his own separate parallel legal action for same purpose and same reasons. All media partners, I believe, would now agree that they are glad they did not break agreement & publish first.

    Carole’s take on recent hit piece. Again, an article on how she dealt with her sources and subject access requests, and yet I was never reached for comment on being a source or consequential subject access requester. That’s how I knew the piece was shoddy, slanted and a disgrace.

    Media Twitter. A service announcement. Everyone else please look away. Media ‘spats’ are boring & pointless. But for the record..

    Section in Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s “Cyberwar” (Oxford 2018) on Cambridge Analytica. Basically, we still don’t know enough to assess their potential impact on campaign analytics or rule out conspiracy with the Kremlin. KHJ doesn’t refer to ICO or DMCS interim reports here either.
