No, -nik/nyk doesn't mean little (-ик is diminutive) - it normally is an actor suffix like in "peacenik", "no-goodnik", вершник, but it also may mean the result of an action like in varenyk (<варений<варити) etc. The little theme would be темка, and темник means a set of topics
