This is a fascinating thread. Prof. Hamilton () proposes the category of platform-enabled crimes to help us understand crimes where the platform isn't to blame... but platform policy, inaction or decision enables a crime to take place. Worth a close read.

This is an amazing and important piece, written by young academics in the thick of it, armed with numbers to demonstrate their case.

We had SO much fun doing this. and I worked to document some of the complexity and breadth of social media, hoping to broaden conversations about SNS beyond Facebook and YouTube. It's the most beautiful book I've worked on thanks to 's Fiammetta Ghedini.

All the most damning research on Facebook's harms and screwups these days is coming from inside Facebook. Why? Because Facebook won't let anyone else have the data necessary to do this kind of research. Imagine how much more we would know if it did.

This is a great thread from the brilliant on a recent FB Oversight Board decision. One takeaway for me: the Board is demanding an independent investigation into disparate impacts in Hebrew vs. Arabic content moderation. Will FB do it?

The data included the interactions of about 50% of Facebook’s U.S. users, not 100% of them as the company had described the data set would include. Researchers have been working with this data set for TWO YEARS, getting academic research papers ready.

This is one way to sink a field. Let’s hope only a few papers have to be retracted or corrected.

Oof. I'm not one of the affected researchers - I chose not to work with SSOne data - but this is stunningly bad for everyone working with that data set.

Somehow I am still shocked that we are finding yet new ways to commodify societal pain and turn it into a profit-mechanism for big media
