Crali faced many challenges as a self-taught painter. Some of his struggles were of a technical nature, his experiments with home-made oil paints ending in “disaster”: “I was forced to return to watercolours, subsequently moving on to tempera.”

This early work by Tullio Crali is an essay in ‘the painting of states of mind’: a particular concern of the initial phase of Futurist research (1910-12), when an expressive use of colour and form had been employed by artists to convey a range of different moods and emotions.

For Crali, aviation was a technological marvel, but it also possessed a profoundly lyrical – even spiritual – dimension: “The direct, pure emotions experienced at great altitudes [...] liberate us from our everyday preoccupations and allow us to touch the threshold of Heaven”.

Tullio Crali officially entered the Futurist movement in 1929. Perhaps inspired by this new status, he would soon produce his first masterpiece The Forces of the Bend. It is a remarkably assured and distinctive performance, which the artist himself recognised as “a leap forward”.
