Ideally, I love to have front-end time to generate ideas & sound palettes. This is the easiest time to be creative, without distractions—just MAKING THINGS. Later in the process/crunch-time it's harder to get in this mode.

#DoctorStrange I had a lot of rare early design time, and by the end we had a large library of weird and strange (haha) sound design for this film and#InfinityWar. “Weird” was definitely a recurring note. Or maybe I should say “strange”… hmmpic.twitter.com/R2LWpYEP6NDiesen Thread anzeigen -
I started w/ organic source recordings, trying to stay realistic, believable, personal… while making recordings of real things sound like something totally different. I thought the magic should feel natural & matter-of-fact. Magic has been around. Only Strange is new to it.pic.twitter.com/RODQVGt1e5

One of the hardest things was the “mandelbrot” kaleidoscoping of reality. A lot of repetitive, patterny sounds. The direction switched btwn realistic/based on visual materials .. to super surreal & weird. In the end, we split the difference. Luckily, I had both palettes made!pic.twitter.com/oORFsFt9Tj

This clip shows (a reel of FX I edited!) both the mandelbrot powers and the “time shard spear” weapons which were by far the toughest sound nut to crack. Pure spacetime being warped. Also Mr. Doctor joke. Yes! https://youtu.be/6PT5rRIhDL0?t=7

Non-literal visuals give you a lot of leeway. I start my mining interesting things, searching the library for keywords and hoping the metadata is good. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack but there are also random other cool things in the haystack.pic.twitter.com/DaNlFfKqJ7

Digging thru the sound library is as creative as the actual processing & editing. I often discover ideas or head down rabbit holes not in my initial notes. Sometimes these are perfect, other times I end up making things not right for this film but excellent for a later one!pic.twitter.com/Wvejuc7HK0

I try for big output initially while ideas are free-flowing, esp. if there are no visuals yet. This contrasts w/ designing during the final mix (VFX show up! + client notes!) w/ mere hours to snap into creative gear & make something perfect. The approach has to be razor-focused.

That’s a little behind the scenes. Thanks for reading!
